Whilst making music shouldn’t be an expensive hobby right from the outset (although it could end up being one, depending on how far you want to go) you will need some things in addition to inspiration. Here is a quick checklist, as you embark on your journey into music making.
Equipment:
- A PC or Mac.
- An external soundcard. Your computer’s internal soundcard may suffice at the beginning, but an external soundcard will become necessary sooner or later.
- Some form of MIDI controller, such as a MIDI keyboard. Nothing to big or fancy, a 25 keys MIDI keyboard will be more than enough to begin with. Alternatively REAPER comes with a virtual midi keyboard that you can play using your qwerty keyboard! Check that out before you get out your plastic.
- Speakers/monitors.
- Headphones.
- Inspiration
- Enthusiasm
- Patience
- Willingness to learn and accept feedback and criticism
