Whilst it is easier than ever to make music, many people new to beat making and production become frustrated when they cannot create the ideas they hear in their head. One of the main reasons for this is a lack of understanding of how music works. Even a basic grasp of things like chord progression will make it so much easier to create the music you want to.
There are many books available on music theory. For the beginner I highly recommend David Harp's 'Music Theory Made Easy', a book which explains everything you really need to know about composing and playing music.
There are also a number of great websites that teach you music theory for free. Here are just a couple:
