When we refurbed thenewbeatmaker.com last year I somehow managed to delete my 'Pensado's Place Appreciation Post', so here's another.
Super mixing engineer Dave Pensado and his manager Herb Trawick sit down with a diverse array of guests, from esteemed singer songwriters to the elite of engineers, producers and mixers.
Recent episodes I've loved have included sit-downs with amongst others, Joey Barresi (Tool, Bad Religion, Wolfmother) and this one, where the guys chop it up with Derek Ali, AKA 'Mixed by Ali'.
Ali is one of the hottest young mix engineers on the planet, thanks in no small part to his astounding work on Kendrick Lamar's 'Good Kid, m.A.A.d. city'. In a far-reaching and highly informative interview which is at times both fun and poignant, Dave, Herb and Ali talk about Kendrick's depection of Compton, working with Dr Dre and, perhaps most useful to readers of this site, some of the secrets behind how Ali gets those drums to sound that good in the mix.
Certainly the best web show of 2012 and the best of 2013 so far. For it's mix (excuse the pun) of knowledge, humour and warmth, you owe it to yourself to become a regular at 'Pensado's Place'.
Props to you, Dave, Herb and the rest of the 'Pensado's Place' team.
