A big shout out to ucallthatlove for putting me on to this collabo project between American MC Ed Rowe and New Zealand producer Concept, 'Essenchill'.
A cohesive and rewarding offering of warm, golden-era inspired hip hop, 'Essenchill' is full of nimble lyricism from the instantly likeable Rowe, atop skillfully chopped jazz and soul samples courtesy of Concept.
Although enjoyable and rewind-worthy throughout, immediate highlights include the meditative title track, the social wake-up call 'What's Goin On' and the poignant 'Delayed Gratitude', which uses the time honoured tradition of a beat switch half way through to great effect.
Thanks again to ucallthatlove for the heads-up, and more importantly, thanks to Ed Rowe & Concept for this collection of introspective, head-nodding hip hop.
